A Lecture on Responsible AI Support
When schools discuss artificial intelligence, the conversation often becomes a choice between enthusiasm and prohibition. That choice is too simple. The educational value of a tool depends not only on what it can produce, but also on the role it is allowed to play.
Consider feedback on student writing. An AI system can identify repeated sentence patterns, suggest alternative transitions, and provide another explanation within seconds. This can give learners more opportunities to revise. Yet speed does not guarantee suitability. A fluent suggestion may be inaccurate, or it may remove a feature that expresses the student's intended voice.
For that reason, the goal should not be automatic correction. The goal should be supported judgment. A learner might compare two revisions, explain which one better communicates the intended meaning, and verify an uncertain claim with a trusted source. The tool supplies possibilities; the learner remains responsible for the choice.
The distinction matters even more in high-stakes decisions. Final grades, findings of misconduct, and decisions about learning support affect a student's future. A system may help organize evidence, but a qualified person must interpret the context, explain the decision, and provide a way to challenge it. Human review is meaningful only when the reviewer has enough time and authority to disagree.
Responsible use also requires transparency at the classroom level. Students need to know which forms of assistance are permitted and why. If the purpose of an assignment is to practice planning an argument, asking a tool for possible counterarguments may support that goal. Asking it to produce the complete final essay would replace the skill under assessment.
The most useful policy is therefore specific rather than dramatic. Define the learning objective, decide which assistance serves it, require verification where errors matter, and keep consequential judgment with accountable people. Artificial intelligence can extend practice and access, but it should not quietly become the author, examiner, and final authority at the same time.
